Ramayana Circuit
Bihar is an ancient land where the mythological King Janak of Videha, Ramayana famed Maharishi Valmiki and Goddess Sita resided. It is said that the Epic Ramayana was written by Rishi Valmiki and believed to have been born in the northern region of Bihar, known as Valmiki Nagar. Since the origination of the epic took in this region, there are quite a few places that have been linked with myths of the events narrated in the Epic. The Hindus regards these places with reverence and visits as pilgrimages. These places are Janakpur, Punaura Dham, Sitamarhi, Panth Pakar (Sitamarhi), Ramchaura (Vaishali), Phullahar (Madhubani), Ahilya Asthan, Valmiki Nagar, Chanki Garh (West Champaran), Ram Rekha Ghat
Sitamarhi: The present-day Sitamarhi was previously known as “Sitamahi” or the “Land of Sita”. On way to Ayodhya after her marriage with Rama, Sita had reportedly stopped at this place. A magnificent temple stands here today. Lakhs of devotees visit the temple during Ramnavami Celebrations in April month of every year.
Janakpur: Janakpur, the erstwhile capital of Mithila, is scared place in Epic Ramayana. It is said that the marriage of Rama and Sita has been solemnized in this place. One can see the magnificent “Ram-Janaki” temple here along with many others temples related to Lord Rama and Goddess Sita or Janaki.
Ayodhya: Famed as the birth place of Lord Ram, it is an important pilgrimage centre about 134 km from Lucknow. Temples and mosques exist side by side in all architectural splendor in the twin cities of Faizabad and Ayodhya. The ghats of Saryu bring alive a deeply spiritual experience. Faizabad was founded by Nawab of Awadh Sadat Khan and a later Nawab Shujauddaula made it capital of Awadh.

The Cradle of luminous Jain Spiritual souls lies in Bihar. Bihar is the sacred destination as the birthplace of the 12th Tirthankar “Vasupujya” and 24th Tirthankar Mahavira. Their non-violent ascetic path became very popular and become one of the prominent religions of India. According to Jain tradition Vardhaman Mahavira was born at the locality called Kundpura in the city of Vaishali in North Bihar and died at Pawapuri (near Rajgir) and left behind a rich legacy and some beautiful temples. In today world a tourist may explore the places associated with the life and preaching of Vardhaman Mahavira and other Jain Tirthankar in Bihar.
Pawapuri: The 24th Tirthankara Mahavira is believed to have attained Nirvana at Pawapuri. The temple is also famous as Jal Mandir. The marvelous white marble temple seems floating in the middle of a magnificent blooming lotus lake. The long walk over the causeway that connects the temples with the main land is a mesmerizing experience with the blooming pink-white large lotuses and the chirping water birds wading around making the atmosphere utterly divine.
Rajgir: Rajgir is famous health resort and equally import in Jain philosophy. As Rajgir is situated between five hills and Jain temples are situated in every hilltop. Rajgir is said to be very close relation with Jain Culture and mythology. Son Bhandar, Veerayatan, Maniyar Math, Kundalpur are some of the sacred places situated in this region.
Vaishali: Vaishali is one of the most ancient and famous sites in India. It has been identified with the modern village of Basarh as the birth place of Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism (599-527 BC). VaishalMahavir - Visit Bihari figures prominently in Jain Literatures. The Jain, both Swetambars and Digambars state that Vardhamana Mahavir was the son of Siddhartha of “Kundpura” or “Kundgrama”, a suburb of Vaishali. A modern temple is constructed in Vaishali which attract tourist from different part of world.
Kundalpur: Untold is the importance of the Parasnath Hill to the Jains, for 19th out of the total 2Jain Temple - Mandar4th Tirthankar’s attained their Nirvana here. The Parasnath hill top with the temples in sylvan setting, is a charming spot.
Lacchaur: Lacchaur is situated about 7 kms south of Sikandara in Jamui district. Two Jain Temples, known as “Muth Buddhroop” and “Muth Purusnath” situated some 5kms south of the village in a picturesque valley between two parallel ranges of hills. Some Jains hold Lacchaur to be the birth place of Lord Mahavira Swamin, the 24th Tirthankara of Jains.
Sikh Circuit
Bihar is intimately associated with Sikhism. The 10th Guru of Sikh religion who was the pioneer in formalization and unification of the follower of Guru Nanak was Guru Gobind Singh. He was the son of the 9th Guru, Guru Tegh Bahadur and was born in Patna on 22nd December, 1666. At his birthplace there is a marvelous Gurudwara called Takht Sri Harmandir Ji Sahib. There are other Gurudwara which commemorate some events of Guru Gobind Ji life. These Gurudwara are not only sacred pilgrimages for the Sikhs but wonderful to be visited by any travelers.
The Sikh regards these places with reverence and visits as pilgrimages. These places are - Patna Saheb, Gurukabagh, Kanganghat, Gayghat, Baaleela and Handisaheb
Buddhist Circuit
The legendary spiritual enlightenment site of the Buddha under the holy Bodhi tree has become the magnetic point for human congregation ever since. The magnificent Mahabodhi temple that had been declared as a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO is a great source of peace. The Kesaria Stupa, highest among the excavated Buddhist stupas is also situated in Bihar.
Rajgir: Rajgir,19 kms from Nalanda, was the ancient capital of Magadha Empire. Lord Buddha often visited the monastery here to meditate and to preach. Rajgir is also a place sacred to the Jains, Since Lord Mahavira spent many years here.
Bodhgaya: Near the holy city of Gaya, the Buddha attained enlightenment. The tree that had sheltered him came to be known as the Bodhi tree and the place Bodhgaya. Today Bodhgaya, an important place of pilgrimage, has a number of monasteries, some of them established by Buddhists of Japan, Thailand, Myanmar, Sri Lanka etc.
Nalanda: A great centre of Buddhist learning, Nalanda came into prominence around the 5th century BC and was a flourishing university town with over ten thousand scholars and an extensive library.
Sarnath: Buddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath after achieving enlightenment, about 10 km from the ancient holy city of Varanasi. The sermon, setting in motion the wheel of the teaching (dharamchakrapravartna) revealed to his followers the 4 noble truths, the concept of the 3 jewels of Buddha, Dharma and Sangha via the 8 fold path, for inner peace and enlightenment. It was here that the Buddha established his first disciples (sangha) to promote his new doctrine. The splendid Dhamekha Stupa at Sarnath was originally erected by King Ashoka, as was the famous lion capital pillar, now the proud symbol of India.
Kushinagar: At Kushinagar close to Gorakhpur in eastern Uttar Pradesh, India en route to Kapilavastu, Lord Buddha fell ill and left this world in 543 BC. His mortal remains were preserved in eight commemorative chortens, and then further distributed by King Ashoka into 84,000 stupas across his kingdom and beyond. Important places to see here are the Mukatanabandhana stupa and the Gupta period reclining Buddha statue in red sandstone.

Patna
Patna is the capital of the Indian state of Bihar, and one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in the world. Patna is also a city for Sikhs. Patna is located on the south bank of the Ganges River, called Ganga locally. Patna has a very long riverline, and it is surrounded on three sides by rivers—the Ganga, Sone, and Poonpun (also spelt Punpun). Just to the north of Patna across the river Ganga flows the river Gandak making it a unique place having four largish rivers in its vicinity. It is the largest riverine city in the world. A historical city on the banks of Ganges was nomenclated by princess Sarika, daughter of king Patliputra.
Vaishali
Vaishali today is a small village surrounded by banana and mango groves as well as rice fields. But excavations in the area have brought to light an impressive historical past. The epic Ramayana tells the story of the heroic King Vishal who ruled here. Historians maintain that one of the world's first democratic republics with an elected assembly of representatives flourished here in the 6th century B.C. in the time of the Vajjis and the Lichchavis. And while Pataliputra, capital of the Mauryas and the Guptas, held political sway over the Gangetic plain, Vaishali was the center for trade and industry.
